Runner’s World — NYC Marathoners Clean Up
December 18, 2012 6:25 amOnly 42 hours before its scheduled start time, Mayor Bloomberg called off the New York City Marathon. Earlier in the week as I rode my bike through the dark and deserted Lower East Side, I found it impossible to fathom a huge event happening amidst the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
At 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning I received a call from my friend Michele Ervin, who recently took over Runner’s World’s photo department. Apparently many of the marathon’s runners were heading to Staten Island to clean up and hand out supplies. So with half-dead batteries and half-open eyes, I jumped in a cab and headed to Manhattan to catch the Staten Island ferry.
Below is a selection of images I took that day, some of which appear in the magazine’s current issue. If you’d like to read the article in full click here.
