Plaster
December 2, 2010 11:58 amBefore I go into the boring details of my recent studio renovation I’ll mention a few interesting things I learned about plaster:
1. Plaster has been used illegally by professional boxers to harden the hand wraps that they wear under their boxing gloves to protect their hands.
2. The medical profession uses it to support fractured bones.
3. Fresco paintings are made by painting on a thin layer of wet plaster – when the pigments sink in, the plaster itself becomes the medium holding them.
4. Plaster has also been used to smuggle cocaine across the Mexico-United States border. The cocaine powder is mixed with the plaster mixture and sculpted. On May 29, 2008, a 6.6 pound crucifix sculpture was seized crossing the border when drug-sniffing dogs detected cocaine in the sculpture.
So back to my renovation… A few weeks ago I undertook a “small” project in my studio by taking down the plaster that covered the exposed brick behind it. If you ever plan to do this I would highly recommend you take caution. Like I assumed, it only took 45 minutes to get rid of the plaster. But the backbreaking 10 hour cleanup was the unexpected part. Check out the pics below.

Wow! Looks like it was well worth it though.
why anyone would ever cover that brick up in the first place is a mystery to me! maybe it was a sculpture;)
