Call Center – WIRED Italy

March 16, 2020 1:37 pm

Back in mid February, just a week before Italy became the epicenter of the Covid-19 crisis, I spent a day at a call center on assignment for WIRED Italy. This call center handles both incoming and outgoing calls, meaning they field customer service calls for huge companies, and they also cold-call to sell goods and services for other companies. Often when I call customer service, I don’t think much about who’s on the other end of the phone. This was an important reminder that they’re good people who have tough jobs. Of all six workplaces I photographed for Wired Italy, the employees at Zeuner were the most thoughtful and generous people we photographed.

This story was part of an issue about the future of work. I also shot a story about a sushi restaurant whose server was a robot, the Ferarri factory, and an esports bar where kids make money playing video games.

Many thanks to Photo Editor Francesca Morosini, creative direction from Pitis e Associati, Producer Elena Lotto, and Assistant Umberto Pettazzoni.
