The Guardian — Simon Van Booy

July 30, 2013 6:08 am

It was a Monday when I got a call from The Guardian to photograph Simon Van Booy. The shoot was last minute, scheduled for less than 48 hours later. I confirmed the job without a brief because it’s The Guardian and they’ve never sent me on an assignment that wasn’t great. Instead of waiting to understand what the assignment was about I googled Simon to try and figure it out myself. He had just released a novel in June so I assumed it was related to that. I bought the book and immediately had a difficult time putting it down. The Illusion of Separateness is a quick read and I was already half way through it when I received the email brief the next morning. It had nothing to do with his new book but instead I learned that he was a widower and had recently asked a woman to marry him. The article is about integrating a stepmother into a family with a young child. Very interesting.
